Sky’s Rolls-Out Fibre Based Broadband To Compete With BT & Virgin
Sky announces that they plan to offer fibre-optic Broadband to a massive 88 percent of the UK by the end of 2013, they say they are going to push their effort beginning in April and will start to fade out the copper-based service.
The big move from copper to fibre-optics will see a internet speed rating of 40Mbps across the UK, which is what BT are currently offering to the market. But they will still have some catching up to do as Virgin currently offer speeds of up to 100Mbps (in few areas). The new fibre package will be called, “Sky’s Broadband Unlimited Fibre package” and it will only be available to just 30% of the UK market at the start of April, however as BT continues to roll-out the fibre across the UK, Sky’s coverage will increase continuously of the course of the next year or so.
Sky’s not Capping
Sky’s customers can expect to pay around £32.50 per month for the superfast broadband service, inclusive of Sky’s £12.50 line rental, the package will be “a totally unlimited product that has no usage caps”.
For those of you not able to have the fibre-based Broadband, Sky will be increase its reach of the copper-based service as they plan to extend to over further 1.5 million homes within two years, which is a six percent increase, this is all according to the source ZDNet. Sky currently provides broadband for 17 per cent of the UK, and see 29 percent of customers choosing the internet, television and satellite TV complete package.
Stephen van Rooyen, Managing Director of Sky’s Sales and Marketing Group said:
“This year sees a number of enhancements that will ensure we create even more choice. Whether it’s the launch of free public Wi-Fi, extending our network into more parts of the UK, or adding fibre to our product mix, we are focused on meeting the demands of customers and on being their number one choice for home communications."
